There are a number of problems that can occur while drilling a well. Whether a drillstring breaks and falls to the bottom of the wellbore or a bit breaks, accidents happen. Even pipe or a tool can fall from the rig floor into the bottom of the well.
Regular drill bits cannot bore through stray equipment that has fallen into the well, which is referred to as fish or junk. If a fish falls into a well, it must be removed by fishing.
Various Fishing Tools
Drilling must be stopped and special fishing instruments used to do fishing on a well.
Each gadget is custom-made to accomplish a certain purpose or recover a specific type of fish. The majority of fishing equipment are screwed into the end of a fishing string, which is similar to drillpipe,
and lowered into the well.
To recover a lost pipe, you have two possibilities.
The first is a spear that fits within the pipe and grabs it from the inside.
An overshoot, on the other hand, is a tool that surrounds the pipe and grabs it from the outside to carry it up the wellbore.
A washover pipe or washpipe is used when a fish is tough to grasp. Washpipe, which is made of large-diameter pipe with a cutting surface at the tip, is run in the well and the cutting edge grinds the fish to a smooth surface. Drilling fluids are then injected into the well to remove debris, and a different instrument is used to extract the remaining fish.
A trash mill and boot basket are sometimes used to retrieve fish from the wellbore. A junk mill is dropped into the well and rotated to ground the fish into tiny bits in this case. After that, a boot basket, sometimes known as a rubbish basket, is lowered into the well. Drilling fluid is injected into the well, and the boot basket raises the ground parts of the fish into the basket and eventually to the surface.
A tapered mill reamer can be utilized to recover casing that has collapsed within the well or unusually shaped fish. Permanent and magnetic magnets are used to recapture magnetic fish, and a wireline spear clasps damaged wireline with hooks and barbs. Additionally, an explosion may be detonated within the well to break the fish up into smaller pieces, and the smaller things may be retrieved using an instrument such as a rubbish bucket.
When a fishing professional is unable to establish which fishing instrument will work best to retrieve the fish, an imprint block is used to get an impression of the fish and allow the professional to know exactly what he or she is working with.
Fishing a well can take days, and drilling cannot take place during this time, however the operator is still responsible for drilling fees. Some drilling companies provide fishing insurance, which exempts operators from paying rig costs during fishing activities.
